The UK tax system runs on the principal of Self Assessment - you make a Return to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and that determines your tax bill and for the most part they take your word for it. However, HMRC subject the returns they receive to all sorts of analysis and checks to other information they hold to ensure returns are credible and the tax is correct. If they are not sure about anything they have extensive powers to ask questions, request supporting records, or just disagree with your calculations. As a result anyone dealing with the tax authorities is at risk of a Tax Investigation.
All our business clients are automatically enrolled* in our Investigation Fee Protection Scheme which means that if HMRC do enquire into any of a number of taxes we can deal with the questions, argue the case (using other experts if necessary) and negotiate the outcome without any additional fee costs to the client. Optional membership is also available for personal tax clients.
Membership involves a prepaid annual membership fee and timely complaince with tax legislation. *Business clients can opt out if they prefer.
